Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you had to change how a manufacturing team thought about safety, not just what they did. What did you actually do, and how did you know it worked?

whether the candidate can build a safety culture through influence rather than just enforcing rules

Tell me about an incident investigation you led where the obvious cause was not the real cause. How did you get past the surface answer?

root cause analysis rigor versus checkbox investigations

Describe a time you used injury or near-miss data to change where you were putting your resources. What did the data actually show, and what did you stop doing as a result?

whether they use data to prioritize rather than just report it

Tell me about a safety or compliance project you managed that had multiple moving pieces and a hard deadline. How did you keep it on track?

project management maturity for juggling multiple compliance initiatives

Tell me about a time you had to coach or develop someone on your team who was struggling with the field engagement or floor presence part of the job.

people development skills for leading SHE professionals

What does a typical week look like for you when half your time is on the floor and half is in the office managing programs and people. How do you protect the floor time?

whether the visible-leadership expectation is realistic for how they actually work, not just how they talk about it

Technical

What federal, state, and local environmental regulations have you had to stay on top of in past roles, and tell me about a time one of them changed and you had to update a program because of it.

depth of real regulatory knowledge versus surface familiarity

How do you decide what corrective action is actually sustainable versus something that looks good on paper but quietly falls apart in three months?

practical judgment about corrective action design, not just process knowledge

Situational

A supervisor on the floor pushes back when you flag an unsafe condition, saying it will slow down the line. What do you do in that moment and afterward?

how they handle pressure from operations while holding a safety line, and whether they escalate constructively

How would you go about building leader standard work for supervisors and managers at a site where safety has historically been treated as the SHE team's job, not theirs?

ability to shift ownership of safety to line leadership, a core stated responsibility

You manage both direct reports on your SHE team and rely on informal safety champions in Operations and Maintenance who don't report to you. How do you keep both groups accountable and moving in the same direction?

matrixed leadership and influence without direct authority

Say you're doing a floor walk and you spot a hazard that's been there for months and nobody has flagged it. How do you handle that conversation with the team and their supervisor without making it about blame?

coaching approach and whether they default to punitive versus developmental correction

You're asked to present a safety recommendation to plant leadership that will cost money and won't show a clear near-term return. How do you make the case?

ability to influence decisions with fact-based rationale, as the posting specifically calls out
