Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a best practice you recommended that changed how a network was run.

What they are checking: Whether they improve operations rather than just following existing procedures.

Tell me about a time you supported an operations team during a major outage with ad-hoc engineering help.

What they are checking: Whether they can step in calmly under pressure and give operations clear, usable guidance.

What would you do

You deploy a change and traffic on a few circuits behaves differently than expected. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they compare against expected traffic behavior and decide quickly whether to roll back.

A recurring outage keeps coming back after every fix. How do you find the real root cause?

What they are checking: Whether they dig into patterns and underlying design issues instead of treating symptoms.

How do you explain the risk of a change to a manager who is not a transport expert?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate technical risk into plain impact for decision makers.

About the work

Walk me through how you would write a Method of Procedure for adding a new shelf and cards to an operational node.

What they are checking: Whether they plan steps, verification and backout so a hardware change does not hurt live traffic.

What does the Engineering Review Board need to see before it approves a tech refresh?

What they are checking: Whether they understand formal design review and can justify changes with testing and analysis.

How do problem management and change management differ, and how do they work together?

What they are checking: Whether they understand ITIL-style processes that keep DoD networks stable over time.

What transport technologies have you worked with, such as SONET, DWDM or OTN?

What they are checking: Whether their hands-on optical transport experience matches the equipment in this network.

How do you test a software upgrade before it touches the production network?

What they are checking: Whether they use labs, staged rollouts and verification instead of trusting vendor release notes.
