Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a reliability initiative you led from idea through design and rollout across several teams.

What they are checking: Whether a staff-level engineer can drive change across teams, not just fix problems in their own area.

Tell me about a postmortem you ran. What changed afterward?

What they are checking: Whether postmortems lead to real fixes under a blameless approach, rather than reports that sit unread.

How do you work with teams in other time zones on shared infrastructure?

What they are checking: Whether they communicate in writing and plan handoffs well enough for distributed teams to work smoothly.

What would you do

Walk me through how you would lead a major outage where devices cannot reach the cloud.

What they are checking: Whether they run incidents calmly with clear roles and communication, then focus on restoring service first.

You need to explain an infrastructure roadmap to tech executives. How do you make the case for investment?

What they are checking: Whether they can connect reliability work to business risk and cost in words executives respond to.

A product team keeps shipping changes that cause incidents. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they use error budgets and partnership to change behavior instead of blocking teams or blaming them.

About the work

myQ is a global IoT cloud platform. How would you define SLOs for a service that opens garage doors from a phone?

What they are checking: Whether they pick user-focused reliability measures and understand that a failed open command is very visible to customers.

The posting mentions both Linux and Windows. What is different about running and automating each at scale?

What they are checking: Whether their system skills actually cover both environments, which many SRE candidates only claim on paper.

How do you decide when to automate a manual operations task and when it is not worth it?

What they are checking: Whether they apply software engineering judgment to toil, weighing build cost against risk and repetition.

How would you design infrastructure to stay highly available across regions for a global customer base?

What they are checking: Whether they understand failover, data replication and tradeoffs between consistency, cost and complexity.

What observability would you want in place before you trusted a new service in production?

What they are checking: Whether they know what metrics, logs, traces and alerts make a service debuggable before trouble starts.
