About your past

Tell me about a time a student pushed back hard on a politically charged topic in your class. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep discussion open and respectful on divisive social topics without shutting students down or taking sides.

Many of our students work full time or are the first in their family in college. How does that change the way you run a course?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for flexibility and clear expectations that help nontraditional students finish rather than drop out.

Tell me about a time you taught online or hybrid. What worked and what would you change?

What they are checking: Whether they can run an engaging course across formats, since adjunct assignments may come in any modality.

What would you do

Walk me through how you would build an intro Sociology or Criminal Justice course if we handed it to you three weeks before the term.

What they are checking: Whether they can produce a workable syllabus, readings and assessments fast, since adjuncts are often hired close to the start date.

PACC courses are taught to high school students for college credit. How would you adjust your teaching for that group without lowering the standard?

A student emails you two weeks before finals saying they are failing and about to lose financial aid. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they know to refer students to campus supports while keeping grading fair and consistent for everyone.

As an adjunct you may not hear from the department until a course opens. How would you stay connected and ready between assignments?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the as-needed nature of the pool and can still be reliable when called.

About the work

Which of the areas on our list, like Criminal Justice, Sociology or Politics, Philosophy, and Law, could you teach next semester, and what courses specifically?

What they are checking: Whether their graduate credits and experience line up with real courses the department needs to staff on short notice.

How do you use real-world examples from Kenosha or Racine, like local government or community agencies, in your teaching?

What they are checking: Whether they can connect theory to the communities Parkside students live in, which keeps applied social science courses relevant.

How do you check whether students actually learned what the course said they would learn?

What they are checking: Whether they connect assignments to stated learning outcomes, which departments need for program assessment and accreditation.
