Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time an integration failure caused bad data to land in a downstream system like the data warehouse. How did you find it and clean it up?

What they are checking: How they handle incidents where silent data errors matter more than outages, and whether they fix the root cause.

This is a hands-on leadership role. How much of your week do you expect to spend in code or design reviews versus managing the team?

What they are checking: Whether their picture of the job matches a manager who still has to make and check technical calls personally.

Tell me about a time you had to work with an external partner whose API was unreliable or poorly documented.

What they are checking: How they protect their own systems and timelines when they depend on a partner they cannot control.

How have you grown a developer on your team from writing integrations to designing them?

What they are checking: Whether they invest in people deliberately, which matters when a small team carries the whole enterprise integration load.

What would you do

A business leader wants a point-to-point connection built this week to meet a deadline, and it goes against your architecture. What do you do?

What they are checking: Balancing delivery pressure against long-term architecture without becoming either a blocker or a pushover.

About the work

Walk me through an integration architecture you owned that connected SAP and Salesforce. What did the data flow look like and where did it break?

What they are checking: Whether they have actually built and run enterprise integrations, rather than only managed people who did.

How would you explain API-led connectivity to a business stakeholder, and when would you choose an event-driven pattern instead?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the tradeoffs between patterns well enough to pick one for a reason and explain it simply.

We have a mix of cloud and on-premise systems. How do you decide what integration platform belongs where?

What they are checking: Judgment about hybrid environments, including latency, security, cost and the reality of legacy systems that will not move soon.

How do you set integration standards, like error handling, logging and versioning, so a team of developers builds things the same way?

What they are checking: Whether they can create consistency across a team so integrations stay supportable after the original author leaves.

How do you secure integrations that move customer and financial data between systems and external partners?

What they are checking: Practical knowledge of authentication, secrets handling, encryption and least-privilege access across integration layers.

How do you monitor integrations so you hear about a problem before the business does?

What they are checking: Whether they think in terms of observability and alerting rather than waiting for users to report missing data.
