Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a mechanical design project you took from an idea to something physical. What did you learn when it met the real world?
What they are checking: Whether they have actually built and tested hardware, not just modeled it on a screen.
Tell me about a time you worked with a senior engineer who had a different idea than you. How did it play out?
What they are checking: Whether they can share their view with confidence while staying open to learning from experience.
What would you do
A part you helped design fails during testing. Walk me through what you'd do first.
What they are checking: Whether they approach failure calmly with data and root cause rather than guessing or getting defensive.
How would you explain stress analysis results to someone outside engineering, like a sourcing or quality person?
What they are checking: Whether they can translate technical findings so other functions can make decisions with them.
You've got two assignments from two engineers and both say theirs is urgent. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they raise conflicts early with their manager rather than silently failing one of them.
About the work
You're designing a part for an anesthesia machine or an infant warmer. How does that change the way you think about tolerances and failure?
What they are checking: Whether they grasp that a mechanical failure here can harm a patient, which raises the bar on margin and reliability.
How do you go about setting tolerances on a drawing, and what happens when you set them too tight?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that over-tight tolerances drive cost and scrap without adding real function.
What CAD tools have you used, and how do you make sure your model will actually be manufacturable?
What they are checking: Whether they think about how a part gets made while they are designing it, not after.
How would you set up a test to check whether a plastic housing will survive being cleaned with hospital disinfectants over years of use?
What they are checking: Whether they can design a test that reflects real use conditions, including chemicals, cycles and aging.
In a regulated medical device setting, a design change can't just be made on the fly. Why do you think that is?
What they are checking: Whether they understand design controls and that every change needs traceable reasons, review and evidence.
