Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had to pull together a lot of data quickly in Excel. How did you keep it accurate?

What they are checking: Whether they check their own work, since interns' spreadsheets often feed decisions about real money.

Tell me about a time you were new to a topic and had to get up to speed fast. What did you do first?

What they are checking: Whether they learn actively and ask good questions, which matters most in a ten-week internship.

This internship includes mentorship and development sessions. What would you want to have learned by early August?

What they are checking: Whether they have a clear sense of their own goals and will use the program instead of just showing up.

Tell me about a group project where someone wasn't pulling their weight. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they deal with team friction directly and respectfully instead of complaining or silently doing all the work.

What would you do

You notice a number in a loan report that doesn't match the source document. Your manager is in meetings all day. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they flag discrepancies clearly and promptly instead of guessing or quietly fixing it themselves.

If you were asked to present a short summary of a loan to the team, how would you structure it?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead with the key facts and risks in a clear order that a busy investment team can use.

About the work

Why does an insurance company invest in commercial mortgage loans, and what do you think it likes about them?

What they are checking: Whether they grasp that insurers match long liabilities with steady, long-term income from assets like mortgage loans.

If you were looking at a loan on an office building, what would you want to know about the property and the borrower?

What they are checking: Whether they can think about cash flow, occupancy, location and borrower strength the way an underwriter would.

What do debt service coverage ratio and loan-to-value tell you, and why would a lender care about both?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the basic risk measures and why income and collateral each protect the lender differently.

Interest rates have moved a lot in the last few years. How do you think that affects commercial real estate lending?

What they are checking: Whether they follow the market enough to connect rates to property values, refinancing risk and new lending.
