Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a technical accounting issue where you and the external auditors disagreed. How did it resolve?

What they are checking: Whether they can defend a position with research and documentation while staying open to being wrong.

Tell me about how you've led a small accounting team through a heavy close cycle without burning people out.

What they are checking: Whether they plan the work, protect their team and build depth so close does not depend on one person.

How do you explain an unusual swing in investment income to a CFO who wants a one-sentence answer?

What they are checking: Whether they can boil complex drivers into a clear, accurate message for senior leaders without hiding the uncertainty.

What would you do

Two days before quarter-end close, Treasury tells you a large derivative trade was booked wrong last month. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they correct errors quickly, assess materiality honestly and tell the right people instead of burying it.

The Investment Management team wants to buy a new kind of asset next month. How do you get ahead of the accounting?

What they are checking: Whether they act as the primary technical resource who shapes deals early instead of reacting after the trade.

About the work

Walk me through the main differences between GAAP and statutory accounting for fixed income securities at a life insurer.

What they are checking: Whether they truly know both bases, including amortized cost, NAIC designations and AVR and IMR, not just one of them.

How do you account for a derivatives hedging program under GAAP, and what makes hedge accounting hard to maintain in practice?

What they are checking: Whether they understand hedge designation, effectiveness testing and documentation well enough to keep the program from failing an audit.

Structured securities like CLOs and RMBS have their own impairment and income rules. How do you approach credit losses on them?

What they are checking: Whether they can apply CECL and statutory impairment rules to complex holdings with sound judgment and clear support.

Private credit and real estate funds are growing in the portfolio. What accounting and control issues do alternative investments raise for you?

What they are checking: Whether they see the valuation lag, equity method and data quality risks that come with alternatives.

How would you assess and strengthen the control environment over the investment portfolio in your first six months?

What they are checking: Whether they think in terms of key risks, reconciliations to custodians and managers, and documented controls that hold up to SOX-style review.

Commercial and residential mortgage loans have their own reporting needs. What would you watch most closely on a mortgage loan book?

What they are checking: Whether they understand loan-level allowance, delinquency, and statutory schedule reporting for mortgage holdings.
