real hands-on familiarity with the specific system this role depends on daily

How do you approach a bank reconciliation when the ending balances don't tie out and there are dozens of transactions to sort through?

a methodical process versus guesswork when facing a large reconciliation

What's your understanding of GAAP requirements around revenue recognition, and how would that play into recording a joint venture equity investment?

depth of accounting knowledge beyond basic bookkeeping, since this role touches JV accounting

How comfortable are you working across multiple entities or locations where each might have slightly different requirements or chart of accounts structures?

real exposure to multi-entity complexity, which this role explicitly requires

Walk me through how you'd set up and maintain a fixed asset schedule, including handling an asset retirement mid-year.

practical command of fixed asset accounting mechanics, not just textbook knowledge

Situational

Say you're reconciling an inter-company account and the two entities' numbers don't match by a meaningful amount right before the close deadline. What do you do?

how they triage a time-pressured discrepancy without cutting corners on accuracy

Explain how you'd handle a sales and use tax filing if you weren't sure whether a particular transaction was taxable in a given state.

knowledge of compliance reporting and willingness to research or escalate rather than guess

If a business partner asked you for a variance analysis on SG&A with only a day's notice, how would you approach it?

ability to produce useful ad hoc analysis quickly under pressure
