Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a large-scale application modernization or digital transformation you led. What was the starting architecture, what did you end up with, and what was your specific role in it?

whether they've actually owned transformation work end-to-end versus participated in someone else's plan

Tell me about a time you had to wrap or modernize a legacy system using something like a strangler pattern. What made you choose that approach over a full rewrite or a straight lift-and-shift?

practical judgment on legacy modernization tradeoffs, not just textbook knowledge

Tell me about a time a business leader wanted something technically risky or unsound. How did you push back, and what happened?

stakeholder management under disagreement, not just collaborative-sounding language

Tell me about a time you mentored a technical team through a difficult architectural change they were resistant to. What did you do to bring them along?

leadership and influence skills with engineers, not just architecture diagrams

Tell me about a time you identified a security or performance risk in a legacy custom application that others had missed. How did you find it and what did you do?

proactive risk identification in aging systems, a core responsibility of this role

Technical

Say you're asked to design the integration strategy across our ERP, CRM, and a set of legacy custom applications. How would you decide where to use synchronous versus asynchronous patterns, and how would you handle a legacy system that can't support modern API standards?

depth of real integration architecture knowledge versus buzzword familiarity with API-led connectivity

Which enterprise platforms have you personally architected solutions on among SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, or ServiceNow, and what was the hardest integration problem you hit with one of them?

whether hands-on platform experience is real and specific or resume-listed

How do you approach API lifecycle management, from versioning through developer onboarding, so teams don't end up building against APIs that quietly break underneath them?

whether they have governance discipline for APIs or just design them ad hoc

What enterprise architecture framework have you used, TOGAF or otherwise, and where did it actually help versus where did you have to deviate from it?

whether framework knowledge is applied judgment or just certification-level recall

How do you evaluate a new packaged integration tool or connector before recommending it, and can you give an example where you rejected one that looked good on paper?

rigor in vendor and tool evaluation versus following hype or vendor pitches

Situational

How would you map business capabilities like financial management or supply chain to our application portfolio if you walked in on day one and found overlapping systems doing similar things?

ability to translate business capability models into concrete architecture decisions in a messy real environment

Imagine you inherit an environment full of point-to-point integrations between legacy custom apps and modern SaaS tools. What's your first move to start reducing that dependency web without stopping the business?

practical sequencing skill on technical debt reduction under real operating constraints

If a project team came to you asking for the enterprise applications section of a solution architecture blueprint with a tight deadline and incomplete requirements, how would you handle producing something usable versus waiting for full clarity?

ability to deliver useful architecture artifacts under real project pressure and ambiguity

In this pivotal role, you’ll shape the architecture of mission-critical platforms, drive innovation across business domains, and ensure seamless integration of cloud, on-premise, and hybrid solutions. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex challenges, and excels at aligning technology with business goals. Key Responsibilities: • Design architecture blueprints aligning enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, SaaS, packaged solutions, legacy custom applications) with business capabilities, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and strategic alignment across modern and legacy systems. • Map business capabilities (e.g., financial management, customer engagement, supply chain) to enterprise and legacy custom applications, ensuring optimal support for core processes and business value. • Define enterprise integration strategy across ERP/CRM/SaaS and legacy platforms, standardizing patterns for API-led connectivity, event-driven integration, and service orchestration. • Design and govern APIs including API lifecycle management, versioning, documentation standards, and developer onboarding/enablement. • Create and maintain an integration reference architecture (sync vs async patterns, batch vs real-time, integration anti-patterns), reducing duplication and improving interoperability. • Oversee integration modernization for legacy systems (wrapping with APIs, strangler patterns), reducing point-to-point dependencies and improving maintainability. • Develop and enforce architecture standards, best practices, and reference architectures for enterprise and legacy custom applications, ensuring compliance, security, and consistency across the portfolio. • Support project solution architecture deliverables by leading and designing the enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, SaaS, packaged solutions, mobile, web, legacy custom applications) sections of the overall architecture blueprint for each project. • Collaborate with Integration Architect and develop solutions to seamless integration of enterprise applications, including legacy custom-developed systems, across on-premises and multi-cloud environments, using APIs, middleware, and service-oriented architectures for interoperability. • Assess and select platforms, tools, and packaged integration solutions (connectors), incorporating industry standards and best practices to optimize functionality and compatibility with existing architectures. • Lead modernization of legacy custom applications, cloud migrations, and upgrades of enterprise applications, ensuring alignment with mapped business capabilities and organizational goals. • Partner with business leaders, vendors, and legacy system teams to define capability requirements, translate them into technical solutions, and validate application mappings for alignment. • Mitigate risks related to application performance, security vulnerabilities, and integration challenges in legacy custom and modern systems, ensuring reliable operations. • Monitor and optimize enterprise and legacy custom applications for scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness, addressing technical debt and ensuring business alignment. • Document enterprise applications architectures, capability mappings, and integration strategies for enterprise and legacy custom applications, guiding teams on implementation, configuration, and maintenance. Experience: • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred. • 8+ years of experience in enterprise application architecture or related roles. • Demonstrated success in leading large-scale application modernization or digital transformation initiatives. • Experience working across multiple business domains (e.g., HR, Finance, Supply Chain). • Hands-on experience with enterprise platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, or ServiceNow. • Experience architecting solutions with enterprise platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow and other large packed applications. • Track record of mentoring technical teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders. Skills: • Proven ability to design and implement enterprise-wide application architecture strategies. • Strong proficiency in cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and hybrid environments. • Expertise in integration technologies (e.g., APIs, ESB, microservices). • Advanced understanding of data modeling, database design, and data governance. • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. • Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies. Knowledge: • Deep understanding of enterprise application ecosystems including ERP, CRM, HCM, and custom applications. • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, Zachman). • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA). • Understanding of business process modeling and optimization. • Awareness of emerging technologies such as AI/ML, IoT, and blockchain in enterprise contexts.
