Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you had to consolidate financial results from multiple business units or sources into one clean report. What made that hard?

experience handling multi-source data consolidation and attention to data integrity

Tell me about a month-end close or forecast cycle where the numbers didn't tie out. What did you do?

problem-solving under deadline pressure and ownership of accuracy

Tell me about a time you found a way to automate or simplify a manual reporting process. What was the before and after?

initiative and real experience with process improvement, not just claiming interest in it

Describe a time you had to translate a complicated set of financial results into something a non-finance executive could understand quickly.

ability to distill data into clear, actionable insight for leadership

Tell me about a business case or sensitivity analysis you built to support a decision. What assumptions did you stress test?

experience supporting strategic decisions with rigorous, flexible modeling

Technical

How would you build a variance analysis that explains why actuals came in below budget for a given month?

understanding of budget-to-actual analysis and identifying root causes versus surface numbers

What's your process in Excel for building a model that multiple people will update and use over time?

practical Excel fluency and awareness of building for others, not just yourself

What experience do you have with journal entries and account reconciliations, and how comfortable are you with that side of the work versus pure analysis?

depth of accounting fundamentals versus purely FP&A background

How do you approach a pricing or margin analysis when you're asked whether a product line is actually profitable?

grasp of margin and profitability analysis relevant to a growth-focused business division

Situational

Say you're preparing the executive deck for a quarterly business review and the finance manager wants it by tomorrow morning, but one business unit hasn't sent their numbers yet. What do you do?

prioritization and stakeholder management under time pressure

If a business leader pushes back on your variance explanation because it doesn't match their gut sense of the business, how do you handle that conversation?

ability to hold ground with data while staying collaborative with non-finance stakeholders

You're juggling the monthly forecast consolidation, an ad hoc request from senior leadership, and a corporate reporting deadline, all due the same week. How do you decide what comes first?

prioritization skills in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment

What's your experience acting as the go-between for a business unit and a corporate finance team, and what tends to go wrong in that kind of role?

awareness of the liaison dynamics between division finance and corporate finance
