Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a voice or conversational interface you designed from the ground up. What was the problem, and how did you decide it needed a voice solution instead of a screen-based one?

whether the candidate has genuine hands-on VUI design experience versus general UX experience being reframed

Describe a usability test you ran that focused specifically on spoken commands or spoken feedback. What did you learn that surprised you?

real experience running voice-specific research, not just generic usability testing

Tell me about a project where you had to explain an AI capability or limitation to a non-technical audience, like product managers or execs. How did you make it land?

communication skill and AI literacy applied practically, since the role requires bridging design and engineering

Have you mentored or influenced other designers without formally managing them? Give me an example of how that went.

leadership and influence style, since the role expects informal mentorship rather than formal authority

Technical

Tell me about a time you had to define intents, slots, and dialog flows for a voice system. What was tricky about getting the grammar or intent structure right?

actual technical fluency with VUI construction, not just conceptual familiarity

How do you think about designing for trust and transparency when a system is using AI or generative models to produce responses a user didn't explicitly ask for?

depth of understanding of human-AI interaction principles beyond buzzwords

What's your process for creating persona guidelines or voice tone for an AI-driven feature, and how do you make sure that tone holds up when the system fails or misunderstands the user?

whether the candidate designs for failure states and edge cases, which matter enormously in mission-critical products

How do you decide when a multimodal experience, combining voice with visual elements, is better than voice alone?

strategic design judgment around multimodal tradeoffs rather than defaulting to one modality

Walk me through a piece in your portfolio that best shows your process on an AI or voice project, from research through to final design.

depth and honesty of portfolio work versus surface-level polish

Situational

Imagine you're designing a voice interface for an officer in the field who needs hands-free access to critical information while their attention is elsewhere. How would you approach that design problem?

ability to design for mission-critical, high-stress, divided-attention contexts specific to public safety

Say a customer or product stakeholder pushes back on a voice interaction pattern you've designed, insisting users will just want a button instead. How do you handle that conversation?

ability to advocate for design decisions with data and reasoning in a cross-functional, sometimes skeptical environment

Picture priorities shifting suddenly midway through a sprint because engineering discovered a technical constraint on the NLP model you were designing around. What do you do?

adaptability and how the candidate handles ambiguity in a fast-moving, engineering-dependent environment

What ethical considerations do you think about most when designing AI-driven features, especially ones that could be used in high-stakes safety situations?

seriousness of ethical reasoning in a context where design mistakes have real consequences
