Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a sensing system you designed using off-the-shelf sensor parts. What problem did it solve, and what tradeoffs did you make?

What they are checking: Whether they can choose and integrate commercial sensors to solve real product problems.

Tell me about a time you worked with mechanical, embedded software and test teams to integrate a sensing system.

What they are checking: Whether they can collaborate across functions to make the whole system meet requirements.

Tell me about a complex problem you solved in a new or unusual way.

What they are checking: Whether they can find creative solutions, which the role says they will be challenged to do.

What would you do

You need to take a proof of concept into mass production. What changes, and what risks do you watch for?

What they are checking: Whether they understand manufacturability, tolerances and supply issues when moving to production.

A supplier's sensor module does not perform as their datasheet says. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can test independently and communicate clearly with suppliers about Dyson's requirements.

About the work

How would you choose between different sensor types, like ToF, cameras or IR, for a new product feature?

What they are checking: Whether they weigh cost, accuracy, power and environment when choosing sensing technology.

Walk me through how you test and validate a vision or sensing system before it goes into production.

What they are checking: Whether they have a thorough approach to testing performance across real-world conditions.

How do you develop and tune a sensing algorithm when the signal is noisy?

What they are checking: Whether they understand filtering, calibration and the link between hardware and algorithm.

How do you keep a sensing solution cost-effective without losing the performance the product needs?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance cost and performance, which the posting puts first.

How do you handle EMC or interference issues that affect a sensor on a product board?

What they are checking: Whether they understand board-level electronics and how noise sources affect sensing.
