Likely interview questions for this role

Behavioral
Tell me about a time you found a break in a cash reconciliation that didn't make sense at first. How did you track down the cause?
investigative rigor and whether they escalate or bury unexplained variances
How do you approach explaining a monthly variance to someone outside accounting who just wants to know why a number moved?
ability to translate technical detail into a business narrative for non-accountants
Tell me about a process you improved or automated in a past close cycle. What was broken about it, and what did you actually change?
whether they drive process improvement themselves or just wait to be told what to fix
Describe a time you were juggling multiple deadlines during a critical close period. How did you prioritize?
time management and reliability under the compressed pressure of close week
Tell me about a mistake you caught in someone else's work, or that you made yourself, in the general ledger. What did you do next?
honesty, ownership, and whether they treat controls as real safeguards rather than paperwork
Technical
Walk me through how you would run month-end close across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions. What's your process for making sure everything ties out and posts on time?
whether the candidate has actually owned a close cycle end to end versus just executing pieces of it
Give me an example of an intercompany or consolidation issue you've dealt with in a multi-entity structure. What made it complicated?
actual depth of experience with cross-entity accounting versus surface familiarity
What's your experience with NetSuite or similar systems, and can you describe a time you had to adapt to a new tool or reporting system quickly?
real system fluency and comfort learning new platforms rather than resistance to change
What GAAP compliance issues have you had to navigate when the books didn't cleanly reflect what was actually happening in the business?
depth of technical accounting knowledge versus rote process following
Situational
Say you're automating a daily cash reconciliation process and the automation starts producing false breaks that eat up hours of investigation time. What do you do?
judgment about when to trust automation versus fall back to manual checks, and whether they'd fix root cause or just patch symptoms
An external auditor asks for a supporting schedule you don't have readily built, three days before a deadline. How do you handle it?
composure under audit pressure and whether they build defensible documentation habits
How would you think about applying AI or automation tools to something like reconciliations or reporting, and where would you be cautious about relying on them?
whether they see automation as a tool with limits, not a black box, given the team's push into AI initiatives
