Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Why do you want to work at our store at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard?

What they are checking: Whether they have thought about this store and its shoppers, rather than applying to any open job nearby.

This is a seasonal role during one of the busiest times of the year. How would you get up to speed fast?

What they are checking: Whether they can learn quickly and contribute right away, since a seasonal hire has little time for a long ramp-up.

Tell me about a time you kept a space neat and organized even when it was busy.

What they are checking: Whether they have the habit of recovering the floor and backroom continually rather than letting mess pile up.

What is your availability for evenings, weekends and holidays?

What they are checking: Whether their schedule fits retail peaks, since the busiest shifts are the ones the store most needs covered.

What would you do

It's the weekend before a holiday, the line is long and the floor is a mess. How do you decide what to do first?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize customers and the register under pressure while still keeping the floor in shape.

How would you suggest a matching item or an add-on without coming across as pushy?

What they are checking: Whether they can use selling skills that help the customer complete an outfit rather than pressuring them.

You notice a small child wandering alone and can't see a parent nearby. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they react calmly and quickly to a safety concern that can happen in a store full of kids.

A coworker keeps skipping customers to finish a task. What would you do?

What they are checking: Whether they will support the customer-first standard among peers in a respectful way.

About the work

Why do you think a store cares so much about following signage and display standards?

What they are checking: Whether they see that consistent presentation helps customers find things and trust the prices they see.

When you're running the cashwrap, how do you make sure your transactions and cash are accurate?

What they are checking: Whether they are careful with money and count back correctly, since register mistakes add up quickly.

Promotions change often here. How would you keep track of what's on sale so you share it correctly?

What they are checking: Whether they will stay current on offers so customers get accurate prices and nobody feels misled at checkout.
