Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you found a medication problem in a patient's home, like duplicate bottles or the wrong dose.
What they are checking: Whether they do real medication reconciliation and follow through with the physician instead of just noting it.
How do you organize a 32-hour week of visits across a driving territory and still finish documentation on time?
What they are checking: Whether they manage time and charting independently, since late documentation affects billing and continuity of care.
Tell me about a time you coordinated care with a physician's office that was slow to respond. What did you do while waiting?
What they are checking: Whether they persist and escalate appropriately while keeping the patient safe in the meantime.
What would you do
You're alone in a patient's home and the patient's blood pressure is 80 over 50 and they're dizzy. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they can make sound independent decisions and escalate without a team in the next room.
How do you handle a home where you feel unsafe, whether from a person, an animal or the condition of the house?
What they are checking: Whether they protect their own safety and follow agency protocol rather than pushing through to finish the visit.
A family member keeps changing the patient's medications against the plan. How do you approach that conversation?
What they are checking: Whether they can work with families respectfully while still protecting the patient and documenting the concern.
About the work
Walk me through your first visit with a new home health patient discharged after heart failure, from the doorstep to your documentation.
What they are checking: Whether they can run a complete start-of-care visit covering medications, home safety, teaching and the plan of care.
You supervise home care aides as Iowa and Illinois nursing rules require. How do you check that an aide's care is actually meeting the plan?
What they are checking: Whether they take supervision seriously and know what to look for when they are not physically there each day.
Our patients range from infants to the elderly. How would your approach differ between a newborn visit and a frail 90-year-old?
What they are checking: Whether they can adapt assessments and teaching across very different ages, as the VNA serves all of them.
How do you decide when a home patient needs more than home health can provide and should go back to the hospital?
What they are checking: Whether they recognize the limits of home care and act before a patient declines past the point of safe management.
