Tell me about a time you had to prioritize between several patients or tasks at once when everything felt urgent.

how the candidate actually organizes competing demands under real pressure, not just how they say they would

attention to detail and honesty about error recognition, which matters heavily in phone triage without direct visual assessment

knowledge of when a symptom crosses from home management into needing same-day or ER-level care

How do you decide when a patient's symptoms warrant a same-day appointment versus advice to go to the ER versus scheduling for later in the week?

understanding of triage decision-making frameworks and comfort using clinical judgment within scope

What's your experience working in an ENT or otolaryngology setting, or with patients who have hearing, sinus, or voice and swallowing issues?

actual familiarity with the specialty's common conditions versus general nursing background

What electronic health record systems have you used for documentation and triage notes, and how comfortable are you learning a new one?

technical adaptability and documentation habits relevant to Advocate's EMR workflow

Situational

Walk me through how you'd handle a phone call from a patient who says they're having sudden hearing loss in one ear today.

whether the candidate can apply triage protocols to recognize a time-sensitive ENT emergency versus a routine complaint

How would you explain post-operative care instructions to a patient after a tonsillectomy or sinus surgery who seems anxious and isn't retaining what you're saying?

patient education skills and ability to adjust communication for comprehension and anxiety

If a patient calls reporting trouble breathing or swallowing after a recent head and neck procedure, what's your immediate response?

recognition of airway compromise as a critical emergency requiring immediate escalation, not routine triage

How do you coordinate with audiology or other specialists when a patient's needs cross into their area?

understanding of the clinic's multidisciplinary structure and ability to communicate across roles

This clinic runs Monday through Friday with a steady patient volume and no weekend coverage. How do you stay consistent and thorough on a high-call-volume day without cutting corners?

whether the candidate has realistic expectations for sustained high-volume outpatient pace and stamina
