Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a case where you disagreed with a speech pathologist or physician on the team about a diagnosis.

What they are checking: How they hold a clinical position on an interdisciplinary team while staying open to other data.

As an assistant professor, what would your scholarly or teaching goals be?

What they are checking: Whether they see themselves contributing to the academic mission alongside a full clinical load.

What would you do

How do you deliver an autism diagnosis to parents who did not expect it?

What they are checking: Whether they can share hard news with warmth and leave families with clear next steps instead of fear.

The waitlist for autism evaluations is long. How would you think about seeing more children without lowering the quality of each evaluation?

What they are checking: Whether they understand access pressure in autism services and can suggest realistic, defensible tradeoffs.

A school says a child is fine in class, but the parents see major problems at home. How do you handle the consultation?

What they are checking: Their ability to work with schools and families who see different behavior without taking sides.

About the work

Walk me through a comprehensive autism diagnostic evaluation for a two-year-old. Which tools do you use and how do you reach a diagnosis?

What they are checking: Their command of standard ASD assessment with toddlers, where behavior samples are short and development moves fast.

How do you tell autism apart from a language delay, an anxiety disorder or a trauma response in a preschooler?

What they are checking: Differential diagnosis skill, which keeps children from getting the wrong label and the wrong services.

What therapy approaches do you use with young children with ASD and their parents?

What they are checking: Whether they can offer evidence-based treatment, not only assessment, since the role covers both.

How do you make sure your evaluations are fair for families from different cultures or who speak a language other than English?

What they are checking: Awareness of bias in assessment tools and practical ways to adjust for it.

How do you write a report that a parent, a school and an insurer can all use?

What they are checking: Whether their reports actually lead to services, which is the point of a diagnostic evaluation.
