Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Tell me about a class project or personal project where you had to design a physical test from scratch. How did you decide what to measure and how did you set it up?
whether the candidate understands the full loop of test design, not just following instructions someone else wrote
Walk me through a time you used Python or MATLAB to analyze a data set that was messy or incomplete. What did you do about the gaps?
real coding fluency for data analysis versus a class assignment where the data was clean
Tell me about a time you had to write up results for people who weren't in the room when you ran the test. How did you decide what mattered enough to include?
report writing judgment and audience awareness, since this is called out explicitly in the posting
Describe a situation where you had to work with a technician or someone with more hands-on experience than you to get something built or tested. How did that go?
whether the candidate can collaborate respectfully with experienced test technicians instead of just directing them
What's your experience with boats or marine propulsion, even informally, and how has that shaped how you think about this kind of engineering?
genuine interest and context versus someone who applied to any mechanical engineering internship
Tell me about a project where the plan changed partway through because new data came in. How did you adjust?
adaptability, since the internship scope is explicitly described as flexible and iterative
Technical
Say you're given load cell data from an on-water test in rough water, and the readings are noisy and inconsistent across three runs. How would you figure out what's real signal and what's noise?
basic signal processing instincts and skepticism about raw data
Explain the difference between what a CFD simulation and an FEA simulation would each tell you about a propeller or gearcase, and when you'd ask for one versus the other.
whether the candidate actually knows the distinction between fluid and structural simulation tools, not just that both exist
You're asked to feed both simulation output and physical test results into a 1-D performance prediction model. What would concern you about mixing those two data sources?
understanding of model assumptions and data quality when combining heterogeneous inputs
Situational
If you had hydrodynamic test results that contradicted what the CFD simulation predicted, what would you do next?
how the candidate handles conflicting evidence and whether they'd default to blind trust in either simulation or physical test
If early test results showed a new gearcase shape improving speed but hurting handling in turns, how would you think through that tradeoff?
grasp of competing functional requirements in propulsor design, not just single-metric optimization
If a component-level structural test came back showing a part failed under a load condition that CFD said should be fine, walk me through how you'd start investigating.
root-cause thinking across simulation, physical testing, and hardware, and whether they'd jump to conclusions
