Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about an HRIS implementation or major upgrade you led. What went wrong and how did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they have owned real system projects end to end, including the messy parts.

Tell me about a report or dashboard you built that helped HR leaders make a better decision.

What they are checking: Whether they turn system data into something leaders actually use.

How do you train HR colleagues and employees on a system change so adoption actually happens?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for people, not just configuration, when rolling out changes.

What would you do

If you were the only person who owns HR systems here, how would you spend your first 90 days?

What they are checking: Whether they can assess the current state, find the biggest risks and set priorities without a team behind them.

HR leaders want a new feature configured quickly, but you think it will create problems later. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with reasons while still supporting the business.

How do you work with IT and outside vendors when a system issue spans all of you?

What they are checking: Whether they can coordinate and hold vendors accountable without formal authority over them.

Being the sole owner means there's no backup. How do you document your work so the systems don't depend only on you?

What they are checking: Whether they think about continuity and knowledge sharing in a one-person role.

About the work

How do you keep employee data clean when it flows between the HRIS, payroll and benefits vendors?

What they are checking: Whether they understand integrations and build checks to catch errors before they hit paychecks.

How do you decide who gets access to what in an HR system, and how do you review it over time?

What they are checking: Whether they take role-based security and sensitive data seriously at a public company.

Walk me through how you would test a configuration change before it goes live.

What they are checking: Whether they use a disciplined testing and release process instead of changing production directly.
