Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you were called to a home for a patient in crisis, maybe severe dyspnea or agitation, and you had to figure out what was going on and act fast. What did you do?

whether the candidate can independently assess and intervene in acute symptom crises without direct on-site backup

What does hospice philosophy mean to you in practice, especially when a family is pushing for more aggressive intervention than fits the goals of care?

depth of understanding of hospice goals of care versus curative mindset and comfort holding that line with families

Tell me about a time a caregiver was struggling emotionally, maybe angry or in denial, during a home visit. How did you handle that conversation?

emotional composure and skill guiding families through grief and difficult decisions in real time

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news or talk through a decision to stop treatment with a patient or family. How did that conversation go?

comfort with end-of-life conversations and ability to support autonomy in treatment decisions

What's your experience working without a team physically present, whether that's home health, ICU on-call, ER, or hospice, and what did you learn about trusting your own judgment in that setting?

prior experience with autonomous clinical decision-making in unsupervised settings

Technical

Tell me about how you manage terminal secretions and agitation in a dying patient. What's your approach, and how do you talk the family through what's happening?

clinical knowledge of end-of-life symptom management combined with the ability to translate it into caregiver education

How do you approach initiating a standing order or physician protocol on your own, say for breakthrough pain, when you can't reach the doctor right away?

understanding of scope of practice and comfort acting within standing protocols without overstepping

Describe how you'd document an after-hours visit so the weekday team has everything they need without you being there to explain it in person.

quality of handoff documentation and continuity of care across shifts

Situational

A family calls you at 9pm on a Saturday saying their loved one is more agitated and pulling at the air, and they sound panicked. Walk me through what you'd ask and do over the phone before you decide whether to go out there.

phone triage skill and judgment about when a visit is truly necessary versus phone-manageable

You're covering a large territory across South Milwaukee on a Sunday and get two urgent calls at the same time from different homes. How do you decide who you see first and what do you do about the other family in the meantime?

triage prioritization and communication skills when the nurse is physically stretched thin

This role is Friday through Sunday, 8am to 8pm, covering weekend holidays too. What draws you to that schedule, and how do you keep yourself steady across three long, unpredictable shifts in a row?

realistic fit with the shift pattern and self-awareness about pacing and burnout risk

You arrive at a home and the clinical picture doesn't match what was reported in the chart or the last visit note. What do you do?

independent critical thinking and willingness to trust one's own assessment over secondhand information

How do you handle driving to unfamiliar homes and neighborhoods, sometimes late in the day, and still walking in ready to manage a crisis calmly?

practical readiness for the logistics and safety realities of solo home visits
