Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you got a call from a caregiver who sounded panicked about a symptom change. What did you do first, and how did you decide whether it needed a home visit or could be managed by phone?

whether the candidate can triage under pressure and knows when a phone intervention is enough versus when in-person assessment is required

What does hospice philosophy mean to you, and how does it change the way you make clinical decisions compared to other settings you've worked in?

genuine grasp of comfort-focused care versus curative instincts carried over from acute settings

Tell me about a time a family wanted to pursue treatment that seemed to go against the goals of care. How did you handle that conversation?

skill in supporting patient autonomy and difficult conversations without being confrontational

Tell me about a patient death you were present for. What did you do in the moments right after, both for the family and for the paperwork and next steps?

composure and process knowledge around pronouncement, family support, and required documentation

Tell me about a time you had to make a clinical call on your own, without being able to reach a physician or teammate right away. What happened and how did it turn out?

comfort with autonomous decision-making, since this role runs largely solo during after-hours coverage

Technical

Tell me about a patient you managed with terminal secretions or air hunger near the end of life. What interventions did you use and how did you support the family in the room at the same time?

hands-on competence with core hospice symptom management and the ability to treat patient and family together

How do you approach documenting a visit so the next nurse coming on shift, maybe someone who's never met this patient, knows exactly what's going on?

quality of handoff communication in a program where continuity depends entirely on written notes between shifts

What's your experience with managing agitation or anxiety in a dying patient, especially when the usual medications aren't fully controlling it?

depth of clinical knowledge in a common but difficult end-of-life symptom cluster

Situational

You're on a Saturday shift and get two urgent calls at the same time, one about escalating pain and one about a family in crisis after a death just occurred. How do you decide what to do?

prioritization judgment when working solo on a weekend with no backup immediately available

Say you arrive at a home visit and the physician orders you have don't seem to cover what the patient needs right now. What do you do?

understanding of scope of practice and comfort escalating to physicians or APPs without overstepping

Describe your experience driving to patient homes for visits, sometimes in unfamiliar neighborhoods, sometimes with narrow windows of time. How do you manage a full slate of urgent visits across a territory in one shift?

realistic understanding of the logistics and pace of home-based, on-call weekend work

This role covers Friday through Sunday, twelve-hour days, plus certain holidays. What has made a weekend or on-call schedule work or not work for you in the past?

realistic self-assessment of fit with a nontraditional, physically demanding schedule
