Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you noticed a change in a patient's condition during a home visit. What did you do and how did you communicate it to the RN?

judgment in recognizing clinical changes and discipline in escalating through the RN rather than acting outside scope

Tell me about a time your documentation mattered for reimbursement or a regulatory review. What made it solid?

understanding that home health notes carry financial and compliance weight, not just clinical value

Describe a patient or family you had to teach something difficult, like managing a new medication or wound care. How did you check that they actually understood it?

patient education and health literacy skills, since the role leans heavily on family self-care teaching

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a plan of care or had a concern about it. How did you raise that with the RN?

whether the candidate can advocate for a patient while respecting the RN's supervisory role

How have you kept your clinical knowledge current, whether through continuing education, in-services, or something else?

commitment to ongoing competency required for license renewal and evolving evidence-based practice

What has your experience been working independently in the field versus working under closer supervision, like in a hospital or clinic?

readiness for the autonomy of home health nursing where an RN is not physically present

Technical

Walk me through a typical home visit from the time you knock on the door to when you leave. What are you assessing along the way?

whether the candidate has a real, organized process for independent home visits versus a facility-trained routine

How do you use SBAR when handing off a patient, either to the RN or to another team member?

familiarity with the specific communication tool named in the posting and whether they apply it in practice, not just by name

What do you do when a patient needs to be lifted or transferred and you're not sure you can safely do it alone?

knowledge of safe lifting protocols and willingness to ask for equipment or a second person rather than risk injury

Situational

You're doing a lab draw in a patient's home and the patient becomes anxious and starts refusing. What do you do in that moment?

ability to de-escalate and adapt technique while staying safe and respecting patient autonomy

You arrive at a home and something about the environment feels unsafe, maybe an aggressive dog, a hostile family member, or a hoarding situation. What do you do?

personal safety judgment and whether they know when and how to pull back or get support

How do you plan your day when you have several patients spread across Milwaukee, including areas near St. Luke's and Sinai, with weather or traffic working against you?

time management, self-organization, and realism about the driving demands of the job

A family seems to be struggling to follow the care plan, maybe skipping medications or not doing wound care correctly. How do you approach that conversation without shutting them down?

motivational interviewing skill and ability to build trust rather than lecture
