Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you were juggling many urgent requests at once. How did you decide what to handle first?
What they are checking: Whether they can triage calmly in a fast environment instead of answering whoever is loudest.
Tell me about a time you caught a small detail that other people missed. What would have happened if you had not caught it?
What they are checking: Whether attention to detail is a real habit they can show, since paperwork errors in forwarding are expensive.
This role is on-site five days a week with a structured training program. What do you expect to find hard in the first few months, and how will you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they have realistic expectations about a steep learning curve and a plan for learning fast in person.
Agents here often move on to operations, sales or account management. Where do you see yourself going, and what would you need to learn here first?
What they are checking: Whether they see this role as a real foundation and are motivated to master operations before moving on.
What would you do
A customer's container just got rolled to the next vessel and their goods will be a week late. How do you tell them, and what do you offer?
What they are checking: Whether they deliver bad news early and come with options, which is how a forwarder keeps a customer after a miss.
The cutoff for documents is in two hours and the customer still has not sent the commercial invoice. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they chase missing information with urgency and plan for the miss before it happens, not after.
You will work with carriers, customs brokers, truckers and the customer on the same shipment. How do you keep everyone in sync?
What they are checking: Whether they can run communication across many outside parties without letting a handoff fall through the cracks.
A customer calls upset and blames you for a delay that was really caused by the steamship line. How do you handle that call?
What they are checking: Whether they can own the customer relationship without arguing about fault, while still fixing the real problem.
About the work
Walk me through the life of an ocean export shipment, from the customer's booking to the container arriving at the destination port.
What they are checking: Whether they understand the full shipment lifecycle well enough to know where things usually go wrong and who owns each step.
What documents travel with an ocean export shipment, and which one would worry you most if it had an error?
What they are checking: Whether they know a bill of lading or commercial invoice mistake can hold cargo at port and cost the customer real money.
What do you know about Incoterms, and why would the terms on a shipment change what you do as the forwarder?
What they are checking: Whether they grasp that Incoterms decide who pays and who is responsible at each leg, which shapes every booking.
