Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

What they are checking: Whether they have the curiosity and attention to detail that make a good tester.

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new tool or technology quickly for a class or project.

What would you do

A developer says the bug you found is not a bug, it is how it is supposed to work. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they go back to the requirements and stay respectful instead of arguing from opinion.

HCSC builds systems for health insurance members. Why might testing be more serious here than at a typical app company?

What they are checking: Whether they connect software defects to real people getting claims paid or care approved.

You are given an assignment and the instructions are vague. What do you do in your first few days?

What they are checking: Whether they ask good questions early and take ownership of a deliverable.

About the work

What do you think a QA tester is really responsible for on a software team?

What they are checking: Whether they see testing as protecting users and the business, not just clicking through screens.

If I gave you a login page to test, what test cases would you write?

What they are checking: Whether they think about edge cases, bad input and security, not only the happy path.

How would you write up a bug so a developer can reproduce it on the first try?

What they are checking: Whether they know a good bug report includes steps, expected results, actual results and the environment.

What do you know about automated testing, and when would you choose a manual test instead?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the tradeoffs of automation rather than assuming it always wins.
