Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a multi-year software or cloud sourcing strategy you built from scratch. What made you land on that approach, and how did it hold up over time?

whether the candidate can think in multi-year strategic terms rather than transactional deal-making

Tell me about the toughest enterprise license agreement or SaaS contract negotiation you've led. What was the vendor pushing for, and where did you end up?

real depth of negotiation experience at the commercial complexity this role demands

Tell me about a Quarterly Business Review you ran with a strategic vendor that actually changed the relationship or the roadmap.

whether QBRs are treated as real value-creation tools or just status meetings

Describe a time you had to get Legal, IT, and a business unit leader aligned on a vendor decision when they each wanted something different.

cross-functional influence without formal authority over those groups

Tell me about a time you had to walk into an executive meeting and explain a complex technical or commercial term in a way that changed the decision they were about to make.

the executive communication skill the posting explicitly calls out

How have you built or scaled a sourcing team, and what did you do when someone on that team wasn't performing at the level the role needed?

actual people management experience, not just team membership

Technical

How do you approach negotiating a cloud services agreement with AWS, Azure, or GCP differently than a traditional software license deal?

whether their cloud contracting knowledge is specific or just name-dropped

What third-party risk frameworks or TPRM processes have you actually used to evaluate a cybersecurity or software vendor, and what did that process catch or miss?

hands-on familiarity with TPRM versus surface-level buzzwords

How do you handle open-source software governance in a procurement context? Give me a specific situation where it mattered.

whether they understand OSS risk as a procurement issue, not just a legal one

Walk me through how you'd build a TCO model comparing two competing SaaS platforms with very different pricing structures, one usage-based and one seat-based.

ability to translate messy commercial structures into comparable financial analysis

Situational

Say your Corporate Cyber Security team flags a strategic vendor mid-renewal for failing a third-party risk assessment. The business unit says the vendor is critical and irreplaceable right now. What do you do?

how they balance security governance against business dependency without just deferring to whichever side is loudest

Picture this: you're six weeks from a major ELA renewal, the vendor just announced a price increase well above what's budgeted, and the business unit says they can't operate without this software. How do you handle the next six weeks?

negotiation leverage and composure under a realistic high-stakes deadline

What's your view on where cybersecurity procurement and cost optimization come into tension, and how do you decide which one wins in a given deal?

whether they have a real point of view on balancing security rigor against the cost pressure this role is measured on
