Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you landed a tier-1 media placement from scratch. Walk me through how you came up with the story and got a reporter to bite.

whether they can actually generate original story angles and pitch them, not just distribute press releases

Describe a time an executive wanted to say something to a reporter that you thought was a bad idea. What did you do?

judgment and willingness to push back on senior leaders, since the role requires advising executives directly

How do you build a thought leadership plan for an executive who doesn't have a clear point of view yet? Give me an example.

ability to proactively shape narrative rather than just react to requests

Tell me about a relationship you've built with a journalist or producer over time. How did that pay off later?

depth of real media relationships versus a generic contact list

Give me an example of a process you built or fixed that made your communications team more efficient.

the operations-minded, process-improvement instinct called out in the posting

Tell me about a piece of writing you're proud of that had to go through a lot of internal reviewers before it went out. How did you keep it strong?

writing quality under the pressure of corporate approval processes and multiple stakeholders

How would you describe your executive presence when you're in the room with a CEO or CFO who's nervous before a big interview?

polish and confidence needed to advise senior leaders directly, not just support from behind the scenes

Technical

What's your understanding of what a company can and can't say publicly around an earnings release, and how has that shaped a pitch you've written?

real knowledge of public company financial communications rules, not just general PR experience

Walk me through how you'd draft a briefing document for an executive going into a high-stakes interview.

practical command of media relations materials and preparing spokespeople

How do you track whether media coverage is actually working, and what would you do if the numbers looked fine but the coverage felt low quality?

whether they think critically about metrics versus just reporting volume

Situational

Say we have quarterly earnings coming up next week and the CFO wants a new storyline pulled out of the numbers. How would you work with Investor Relations to figure out what's newsworthy versus what's just financial detail?

comfort translating financial disclosure into media-safe narrative, and knowing where the line is with regulated communications

You're coordinating an interview between our CEO and a national business reporter, and two internal stakeholders disagree on the messaging the day before. What do you do?

project management under pressure and ability to navigate a matrixed organization without stalling the process

If you were new here and had to pitch a technology and innovation story about Motorola Solutions to a reporter who covers public safety or defense, what would you need to learn first, and where would you look for it?

ability to quickly get up to speed on an unfamiliar, technical industry and find real angles
