Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You will support the culinary director in leading the food and nutrition team. Tell me about a time you led a kitchen shift.

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience directing cooks, not just working alongside them.

Tell me about a time you handled a complaint about food from a patient or customer.

What they are checking: Whether they listen and fix the issue, since patient satisfaction is part of this role.

What would you do

A cook on your shift keeps skipping temperature logs. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they enforce food safety standards firmly and fairly instead of letting it slide.

Patient meals are running late to the floors. What do you do in the moment, and what do you change afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they can fix a service delay fast and then find the root cause.

Your shift is 7 to 5 and two people call out. How do you cover the day?

What they are checking: Whether they can reorganize work and step in themselves when staffing falls short.

About the work

How do you make sure patient meals are accurate to diet orders when the kitchen is under pressure?

What they are checking: Whether they build checks into the line so therapeutic diet errors do not reach patients.

Walk me through how you plan production for a day that includes patient trays, a retail cafe and a catering event.

What they are checking: Whether they can forecast quantities and sequence prep across very different services.

How do you train a new cook on recipes and standards so food is consistent every day?

What they are checking: Whether they can teach consistently, since hospital diets depend on following recipes exactly.

What do you do to get a kitchen ready for a health inspection or a surprise visit?

What they are checking: Whether they keep a kitchen inspection ready all the time, not just before a visit.

How do you control food waste and costs without hurting quality?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that a sous chef helps manage budget through portions and ordering.
