Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Walk me through a process improvement project you led or supported from start to finish. What was the problem, what did you do, and what changed as a result?
whether the candidate has hands-on experience running an improvement project end to end, not just attending training
Tell me about a time you facilitated a kaizen event or a value stream mapping session. How did you get the room to engage, and what came out of it?
real facilitation experience versus book knowledge of the tools
Tell me about a time your improvement idea was resisted by the people who'd actually have to do the new process. What did you do?
skill in change management and stakeholder buy-in, since the role leans heavily on this
Describe a project where the data told you something different from what everyone assumed going in. How did you handle that conversation?
analytical honesty and courage to challenge assumptions with evidence
Technical
What is the difference between a Kaizen event and a DMAIC project, and when would you use one over the other?
depth of Lean Six Sigma knowledge versus surface familiarity with buzzwords
How would you build a dashboard to track a set of KPIs for a manufacturing line, and what would make you trust the numbers on it?
practical data literacy and whether they think about data quality, not just Excel formatting
How do you calculate and defend a cost savings or ROI number for a project when leadership questions whether the savings are real?
rigor in financial tracking and ability to hold up under scrutiny from leadership
What's your experience writing or maintaining SOPs, and how do you make sure people actually follow them after you've written them?
whether they understand documentation is only useful if it changes behavior on the floor
What Lean tools have you actually applied on the job, like 5S or 5 Whys, and can you give a specific example of each?
whether their tool knowledge is applied experience or just certification material
Situational
Say you find that a distribution center's pick process has a lot of variation between shifts. How would you go about figuring out the root cause?
whether they default to a structured approach like 5 Whys or DMAIC rather than guessing
Imagine you're partway through documenting a future-state process and the team can't agree on what the standard should actually be. How do you move it forward?
comfort mediating disagreement and driving toward a decision without formal authority
How would you prioritize which improvement opportunities to chase first if you had five good ideas and only time for two?
ability to weigh impact and effort rather than chasing every idea equally
This role sits between DC leadership, manufacturing, and cross functional teams. How do you keep everyone updated on a project without drowning them in status reports?
communication judgment and stakeholder management across different functions
