Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Why Marshalls, and why a leadership role at the front of the store?
What they are checking: Whether they have a real reason for wanting to lead people, not just a higher title or more hours.
Tell me about a time you had to keep several people organized at once.
What they are checking: Whether they have any coordinating experience, even informal, to draw on when managing registers and breaks.
Tell me about a time you trained someone who was struggling to pick up a new task. What did you change about how you taught it?
What they are checking: Whether they adjust their coaching to the person, because new cashiers learn at very different speeds.
Tell me about a time you saw a coworker doing something that didn't seem honest. How did you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they will speak up about integrity issues, which matters because the front end handles cash and returns.
What would you do
You'd assign registers and coordinate breaks for everyone up front. Walk me through how you'd plan breaks on a busy Saturday without leaving the lines long.
What they are checking: Whether they can plan coverage ahead of time instead of reacting, since break timing is where front ends usually fall apart.
How would you coach a cashier who rings accurately but never mentions the store credit card or loyalty program?
What they are checking: Whether they can coach a sales behavior without making the associate feel pushy or nagged.
A customer is upset because a return is past the policy window, and they want to speak to someone in charge. What do you say?
What they are checking: Whether they can hold company policy while keeping the customer's dignity and the line calm.
The line is backing up, two registers are open, and one associate is on break. What do you do in the next two minutes?
What they are checking: Whether they act fast on POS coverage and know when to jump on a register themselves.
About the work
CEC here means Customer Experience Coordinator at Marshalls. What do you think separates a coordinator from a cashier?
What they are checking: Whether they understand the shift from doing transactions to owning the whole front end experience.
This role says you maintain confidentiality. What kinds of things at the front end would you keep to yourself?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that customer information, cash counts and coworker issues are not for sharing around the store.
What does personalizing the customer experience look like at a register when you only have about a minute with someone?
What they are checking: Whether they understand small, real touches like eye contact and a genuine comment, rather than a scripted greeting.
