Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
There is a safety bonus on this job. Tell me about your driving record over the last few years.
What they are checking: Their honesty about accidents and violations, and whether they own past mistakes rather than blaming others.
Tell me about a time a customer or store employee was upset about a late or damaged delivery. How did you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they stay calm and helpful with retailers, since drivers are the face of Ace at the store.
Why do you want to drive for a distribution center rather than an over-the-road carrier?
What they are checking: Whether they want the home time and physical routine this route work brings, which predicts how long they stay.
What would you do
You arrive at a store and the back alley is too tight to get the trailer in safely. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they choose safety and communication over forcing a backing maneuver to stay on schedule.
Midway through a route, the weather turns bad with ice on the roads. Walk me through your decisions.
What they are checking: Their judgment about slowing down, calling dispatch and pulling over before conditions become dangerous.
What would you do if you noticed a mechanical problem on your truck that the shop said was fine?
What they are checking: Whether they trust their own inspection and escalate, rather than drive a truck they believe is unsafe.
About the work
These are direct-to-store deliveries from the Princeton distribution center. What experience do you have with multi-stop retail routes?
What they are checking: Whether they can handle tight store lots, multiple stops and unloading, which differs a lot from long-haul freight.
Walk me through your pre-trip inspection. What are you looking at, and what would make you refuse to roll?
What they are checking: Whether their inspection is a real habit with clear stop points rather than a box they check on paper.
How do you manage your hours of service when a delivery runs late and you are close to your limit?
What they are checking: Their command of DOT hours-of-service rules and willingness to stop legally even when it is inconvenient.
How do you secure a mixed load so freight does not shift between stops?
What they are checking: Whether they understand load securement on a route where the load changes after every stop.
