Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This is a 2nd shift, roughly 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., 45 to 50 hours a week. How does that fit your life?

What they are checking: Whether they can reliably work late shifts and long weeks, which is the first thing that makes this hire work.

Tell me about your Class A experience. What kinds of equipment and runs have you done?

What they are checking: Whether they have real tractor-trailer experience that fits line-haul and customer service runs.

How do you stay alert driving at night, especially near the end of a long shift?

What they are checking: Whether they manage fatigue seriously, since night driving raises crash risk.

Tell me about your driving record and any incidents you've had. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Whether they are honest about their record and take lessons from past mistakes.

What would you do

Sanimax hauls animal byproducts and used cooking oil. How do you feel about working around that kind of material?

What they are checking: Whether they are comfortable with deadstock and rendering materials, since this work is not for everyone.

You arrive at a customer site and the collection area is a mess. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they take care of customer sites and equipment as part of the job, not just the driving.

Roads are icy and you are running behind on a line-haul run. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they slow down and communicate with dispatch rather than taking risks to make up time.

About the work

Walk me through how you do a drop-and-hook safely.

What they are checking: Whether they check the fifth wheel lock, landing gear, air and electrical lines and do a tug test every time.

What do you check on your pre-trip inspection, and what would make you refuse to take a truck out?

What they are checking: Whether they inspect thoroughly and will put safety ahead of the schedule when equipment is unsafe.

How do you handle hours of service rules on a schedule like this?

What they are checking: Whether they understand federal limits and plan their day to stay legal without being pushed.
