About your past
Tell me about a project where you took messy real-world data and turned it into something a person could actually use.
What they are checking: Whether they have done the unglamorous cleaning work that most real analytics and AI projects depend on.
Which AI tools or generative AI assistants have you used, and where have they let you down?
What they are checking: Whether they use these tools critically and know their limits, such as made-up answers and weak math.
How would you explain a regression or classification result to someone in operations who has never taken a statistics class?
What they are checking: Whether they can translate technical output into plain language that drives a decision on the plant floor.
Tell me about a time you had to learn a new tool or language quickly to finish something.
What they are checking: Whether they learn on their own under time pressure, which an internship on fast digital projects requires.
What would you do
If a plant manager asked whether AI could help predict when a piece of equipment will fail, how would you start figuring out if that is even possible?
What they are checking: Whether they ask about available data and the business problem before jumping to a model or tool.
Say you built a dashboard and the numbers do not match what the finance team reports. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they trace definitions and data sources calmly instead of assuming their own numbers are right.

What would you do if you were handed a project in your first week with very little direction?
What they are checking: Whether they can scope ambiguous work, ask good questions and make progress without constant hand-holding.
About the work
What is the difference between automating a task and applying AI to it, and when would you pick the simpler one?
What they are checking: Whether they can tell when plain automation solves the problem better and cheaper than a machine learning approach.
Walk me through how you would check whether a model's predictions are good enough to trust for a business decision.
What they are checking: Whether they understand validation, holdout data and error metrics rather than trusting a model because it runs.
Write out in plain words how you would join two tables in SQL and spot duplicate rows after the join.
What they are checking: Whether they have working SQL basics and know that joins can quietly multiply rows and distort results.
