Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you were the only clinician in the room during a patient's active dying process and the family was in crisis. What did you do first?

whether the candidate can lead a high-emotion, high-stakes visit calmly without waiting for backup

Describe a time a family wanted to pursue aggressive treatment that conflicted with the hospice plan of care. How did you handle that conversation?

comfort supporting patient and family autonomy, including disagreement with the care plan, without being preachy or avoidant

Tell me about a shift where documentation had to wait because patient care came first. How did you make sure nothing got lost by the time you charted?

whether they can maintain accurate, timely EMR documentation and clean handoff despite a chaotic pace

Tell me about a time you had to support a family through a decision to stop or refuse a treatment. What did you say, and how did the family respond?

depth of hospice philosophy understanding and skill delivering hard news with compassion

How do you take care of yourself after a shift where you've been present for someone's death or a very difficult family crisis?

emotional resilience and sustainability for a role built entirely around crisis and end-of-life work

Technical

Tell me about a patient you managed who had terminal secretions and significant dyspnea at the same time. What was your symptom management plan?

hands-on clinical competence with the specific end-of-life symptom cluster this job centers on

What's your process for initiating a standing hospice protocol or a physician's order in the middle of the night when you can't easily reach the ordering provider?

knowledge of scope of practice boundaries and comfort acting within standing orders

What's your experience providing nursing care independently in someone's home, without other staff physically present to consult?

actual autonomous home-care experience versus institutional team-based experience

Situational

You get a call from a caregiver saying the patient is agitated, pulling at lines, and moaning, and it's 2am on a Saturday. Talk me through how you assess this over the phone and decide whether to go out.

phone triage judgment and whether they can distinguish urgent from emergent without overreacting or underreacting

How do you decide when a symptom change needs an in-person visit versus phone guidance and a plan to reassess later?

resource judgment and independent decision-making since this is a solo weekend role covering a wide territory

This territory covers Crete, South Chicago, Joliet, and Sugar Grove. How do you think about prioritizing multiple calls coming in around the same time across that kind of geographic spread?

time management and triage skill specific to the actual coverage area, not generic scheduling

How do you hand off a patient's status to the Monday team so nothing falls through the cracks after a weekend of changes?

continuity of care instincts, since this role bridges two days of coverage into the weekday team

If you arrive at a home and find the family situation is more chaotic or unsafe than expected, what do you do?

safety awareness and judgment about de-escalation versus removing themselves from a risky situation
