Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you told a sales leader a deal structure would not work as written. How did you offer an alternative?

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver a hard accounting answer while keeping the business relationship and the deal alive.

Tell me about a time you found an accounting issue on a deal that had already closed. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they escalate promptly and fix root causes rather than quietly patching one transaction.

What would you do

How do you get involved early enough in a deal that your accounting input changes the terms instead of just documenting them afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they act as a deal partner up front rather than a reviewer who says no at the end.

You partner with Commercial Finance, Legal, FP&A, Service and Global Controllership. How do you keep a decision moving when several of them disagree?

What they are checking: Whether they can drive alignment across functions without authority over any of them.

How would you build consistent commercial controllership processes across both the US and Canada?

What they are checking: Whether they can design governance that works across regions with different practices and still holds people accountable.

How would you raise the accounting skill of a sales finance team that sees controllership as a roadblock?

What they are checking: Whether they can build capability in others so fewer deals need rescue at the end of the quarter.

About the work

Sales brings you a non-standard deal with bundled equipment, service and software. How do you work through the revenue recognition under ASC 606?

What they are checking: Whether they can identify performance obligations and allocate price in a real medical technology bundle.

What are the order booking risks you watch for on complex customer arrangements?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how booking errors distort backlog and forecasts, not just the recognized revenue line.

A customer asks for a price concession midway through a multi-year contract. What accounting questions do you raise?

What they are checking: Their grasp of contract modifications, variable consideration and how concessions change prior conclusions.

How do you document a technical accounting conclusion so an auditor and a future controller can both follow it?

What they are checking: Whether they write clear, defensible memos that stand on their own when the people involved have moved on.

What channel or distributor arrangements have you dealt with, and what accounting traps did they hold?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize sell-in versus sell-through, rebates and return rights that commonly cause misstatements.
