Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

What have you worked on with your hands so far, whether that's cars, small engines, farm equipment or anything else?

What they are checking: Whether they already have mechanical curiosity and basic tool sense that training can build on.

You'll shadow a senior technician for a while. How do you learn best when someone is showing you a job?

What they are checking: Whether they can absorb instruction, ask good questions and take correction without getting defensive.

Tell me about a time you followed a safety rule even though skipping it would have been faster.

What they are checking: Whether safety is a habit for them or something they do only when someone is watching.

Tell me about a time you made a mistake on a task and how you handled it.

What they are checking: Whether they own errors right away, which matters when a missed bolt can cause a highway failure.

What would you do

This job can mean working outdoors in winter, on nights or weekends, plus overtime. How do you feel about that, honestly?

What they are checking: Whether they will still show up in February at night, since full-time attendance is a stated requirement.

The senior tech you're shadowing tells you to skip a step on the work order to save time. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they will speak up respectfully when something seems wrong instead of copying a shortcut.

Standard repair times set how long a job should take. How would you balance speed against doing the repair right while you're still learning?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that accuracy comes first and speed is built through repetition.

A driver comes into the shop frustrated that his truck isn't ready yet. How would you talk to him?

What they are checking: Whether they can stay professional with drivers and customers, which the posting lists as a core duty.

About the work

What do you know about how air brakes work on a tractor, even at a basic level?

What they are checking: Whether they have done any homework on the system they will be trained on most heavily.

What do you think an FHWA inspection is checking for on a truck?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that inspections exist to keep unsafe equipment off public roads.

Which tools do you already own or know how to use, and which would you need to learn?

What they are checking: Whether they can give an honest, specific picture of their starting skill level.
