Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about your experience running engines on a dynamometer. What kinds of tests have you run?

What they are checking: Whether they have real hands-on dyno time and understand test procedures, not just general mechanical experience.

Tell me about a time a test result didn't look right. How did you figure out whether it was the engine or the instrumentation?

What they are checking: Whether they suspect their own measurement setup before reporting a result engineers will make decisions from.

Describe a time you worked with engineers to troubleshoot a problem on a prototype engine.

What they are checking: Whether they act as a real partner in development, bringing observations and ideas beyond running the test.

What would you do

Mid-test, exhaust temperature on one cylinder starts climbing well above the others. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize a possible lean or ignition problem and stop safely before damage occurs.

An engineer asks you to change a test step in a way you think could hurt the engine. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they speak up respectfully about risk instead of quietly following instructions they disagree with.

About the work

Before you start a test, what do you check on the engine and the cell?

What they are checking: Whether they have a disciplined setup routine that protects the engine, the equipment and the data.

What affects the emissions numbers you record, and how do you make sure a run is repeatable?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how conditions and setup affect emissions results used for compliance work.

How would you explain the difference between brake specific fuel consumption and simple fuel flow?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the performance and fuel economy measures the posting says this testing drives.

How do you document test changes and observations during a long run?

What they are checking: Whether they keep clear records, because undocumented changes make development data useless to the engineers.

What safety hazards in a test cell do you take most seriously?

What they are checking: Whether they respect fuel, rotating equipment, exhaust and noise hazards in a place where shortcuts hurt people.
