Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through a retail merchandising program you owned from the first concept to what actually showed up in stores.

What they are checking: Whether they have carried a program all the way into stores, not just designed it and handed it off.

Tell me about a time a retailer pushed back on a display or promotion you designed. What happened?

What they are checking: How they handle partners who control the floor space and can simply refuse to install your work.

Give me an example of a merchandising decision you made from data rather than instinct.

What they are checking: Whether they measure results and let numbers change their mind, not just defend their creative choices.

Describe how you work with a creative team when you need to push back on their concept.

What they are checking: Whether they can give clear, respectful direction to designers without damaging the working relationship.

What would you do

Mercury sells through national chains and small regional dealers. How would you standardize the merchandising so it scales without looking generic in either setting?

What they are checking: Whether they can build a system with a fixed core and room to flex for very different store formats.

Sales wants a promo live in three weeks and Creative says they need six. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can broker a realistic plan between two teams instead of just picking the louder side.

What would you look at in your first ninety days to understand how Mercury shows up in retail today?

What they are checking: Whether they audit what exists in stores before launching new ideas, which shows judgment and respect for history.

A regional retailer is short on staff and is putting up displays wrong or not at all. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they simplify the ask or offer support, instead of blaming the retailer for poor execution.

About the work

How do you decide whether a fixture, display or signage piece is worth its cost to the retailer and to us?

What they are checking: Whether they connect visual work to sell-through and cost, or treat merchandising purely as a look.

How do you keep the brand consistent between a physical end cap and a retailer's product page online?

What they are checking: Whether they think about the shopper's whole path, including digital shelves, not only the physical store.

How do you check that a merchandising program was actually executed correctly across hundreds of locations?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real compliance method, because untracked programs quietly fall apart in the field.
