Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a lab or project where your results didn't match what you expected. What did you do next?

What they are checking: Whether they troubleshoot carefully and check their method before deciding the data is wrong or right.

Describe a time you had to learn a new subject quickly to finish a project.

What they are checking: Whether they can ramp up fast, which matters in a summer internship where the project has to finish.

Tell me about a time you worked with a team where you had to depend on others for part of the work.

What they are checking: Whether they collaborate well and communicate early, since R&D projects rely on pilot plant and lab colleagues.

What would you do

Part of this internship is refreshing food and beverage formulations to show what a sweetener does. How would you pick which products to update?

What they are checking: Whether they think about category trends and what customers need to see, not just what is fun to make.

You'd gather sweetener characterization data to answer customer questions. How do you keep that data organized so someone else can use it later?

What they are checking: Whether they document carefully, since technical service depends on data others can find and rely on.

How would you explain to a customer, who isn't a scientist, why swapping one sweetener for another changed their product?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate lab findings into plain language, which is the heart of technical service work.

About the work

What do you know about the difference between nutritive sweeteners, like syrups and sugars, and non-nutritive ones?

What they are checking: Whether they have a basic grounding in sweetener science that will let them learn fast during a short summer.

Besides sweetness, what functions does a sweetener play in a finished food like a baked good or a beverage?

What they are checking: Whether they understand sweeteners also affect texture, browning, moisture and shelf life, which is what customers ask about.

How would you set up a sensory evaluation so the results are actually useful and not just people's opinions?

What they are checking: Whether they know basics like blind coding, controls and consistent panels, which make sensory data trustworthy.

What food safety and good lab practices would you follow when making prototype products to taste?

What they are checking: Whether they take food safety seriously in the lab, since prototypes often get tasted by others.
