Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

comfort making tough real-time staffing calls that affect patient safety and staff relationships

Describe a conflict you mediated between a surgeon and a nursing staff member. How did you get to a resolution both sides could live with.

skill as a liaison and mediator between medical staff and nursing, a core part of this role

Tell me about a time you had to give a performance review or coach someone whose work wasn't meeting standard. What did you say and what happened after.

whether the candidate has genuine, not theoretical, experience with the HR side of supervision including hard conversations

Tell me about a situation where a policy or regulatory requirement conflicted with what felt like the practical solution in the moment.

judgment around compliance and ethical conduct when rules and expediency pull in different directions

Describe how you keep your own clinical skills sharp for direct patient care while also carrying supervisory duties like scheduling and HR work.

realistic understanding that this is a working supervisor role, not a purely administrative one

Tell me about a time staff morale was low on your unit. What did you do about it and did it work.

leadership approach to team culture and whether they take ownership of morale rather than treating it as someone else's problem

Technical

What's your experience with CV OR specifically, and how is staffing and equipment coordination different there compared to general surgery rooms?

depth of actual cardiovascular OR knowledge versus general surgical services experience

How would you build a monthly staff schedule that covers unscheduled and emergency cases without burning out your core team?

practical scheduling skill balancing coverage, fairness, and fatigue in a 24/7-adjacent environment

How have you contributed to or worked within a department's operational or capital budget in a past role?

whether they have any real exposure to fiscal reports and budget interpretation, since this is new territory for many bedside-promoted nurses

Situational

Walk me through how you'd handle a Tuesday morning when three add-on emergency cases come in at once and the CV OR block is already tight.

whether the candidate can triage competing surgical demands under real time pressure without freezing or defaulting to escalation alone

How do you decide which cases get bumped when the schedule is overbooked and a surgeon is pushing back?

ability to balance clinical priority, surgeon relationships, and resource limits without capitulating to the loudest voice

If you noticed productivity numbers for your unit were slipping over a few weeks, what would you look at first to figure out why?

fluency with staffing and productivity metrics and a diagnostic rather than reactive mindset

What would you do if you saw a pattern of blood or body fluid exposure incidents happening more than usual in your rooms?

seriousness about safety hazard management and whether they'd investigate root cause versus just reissue PPE reminders
