Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to investigate a complaint from a patient or a physician about care in your department. What did you do and how did it turn out.

how the candidate handles conflict resolution and follow-through under scrutiny from multiple stakeholders

Describe a quality assurance or performance improvement program you built or led. What problem was it solving and how did you measure whether it worked.

whether the candidate can design and prove out a QA program rather than just administer one someone else built

Tell me about a technologist whose performance was slipping. How did you handle the coaching conversation and what happened next.

whether the person can manage performance issues directly instead of avoiding or escalating too fast

Tell me about a time you had to recommend hiring, promoting, or letting someone go. How did you make that call.

judgment and consistency in personnel decisions that affect team trust

Tell me about a time department morale was low. What did you notice first, and what did you do to turn it around.

attentiveness to team climate and concrete leadership actions rather than vague people-management claims

Technical

Walk me through how you'd staff an imaging department day to day and what you look at when you build productivity and quality standards.

whether the candidate has actually run staffing models and understands the tradeoffs between coverage, cost, and patient flow

What's your experience with radiation safety protocols and how do you make sure staff stay compliant with them day to day, not just during an audit.

whether safety compliance is embedded in daily habits or treated as a checkbox exercise

How do you run an in-service or ongoing training program for your technologists so it actually sticks instead of being a one-time session.

whether the candidate has a real system for continuous education versus a one-off compliance training

What imaging modality is your strongest background in, and how do you lead staff in modalities outside that area where you're less of an expert.

self-awareness about knowledge gaps and how the candidate compensates through delegation or the group leaders

Situational

Say a Joint Commission or NRC surveyor shows up unannounced tomorrow. What are you checking in your department before they walk in the door.

depth of hands-on regulatory knowledge versus surface familiarity with compliance buzzwords

One of your rooms is underutilized while another modality has a backlog. How do you figure out what's actually going on and what do you do about it.

operational problem-solving and comfort reallocating resources across modalities

You're given a capital budget for the year and a wish list from your techs that's bigger than the budget. How do you decide what gets funded.

financial judgment and ability to prioritize competing departmental needs against real constraints

A radiologist and a lead technologist disagree about how a workflow should run, and it's affecting patient throughput. How do you step in.

ability to mediate between clinical and technical staff without losing authority with either group
