Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This internship is with LCN Closers in Princeton. Tell me about a mechanical design project you worked on, start to finish.

What they are checking: Whether they have carried a design through real steps, including the parts that didn't work the first time.

Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical idea to someone outside engineering.

What they are checking: Whether they communicate clearly with cross-functional teams like manufacturing, purchasing or sales.

Tell me about a time you got critical feedback on your work from a professor or supervisor.

What they are checking: Whether they take feedback well and improve, which shapes how much an intern gains in one summer.

What would make this internship a success for you by the end of the summer?

What they are checking: Whether they have clear, realistic goals and will take ownership of their own learning.

What would you do

A prototype part fails in testing much earlier than you expected. What do you do next?

What they are checking: Whether they investigate the failure methodically and treat it as information instead of a setback to hide.

About the work

How would you turn a customer need, like a door closer that works in high wind, into a design specification?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate a fuzzy need into measurable requirements, which the posting names as a key responsibility.

What CAD software have you used, and how do you set up a model so someone else can change it later?

What they are checking: Whether they model with clean design intent rather than just getting a shape on the screen.

You'll have access to an on-site test lab. How would you design a test to check whether a part will last a million cycles?

What they are checking: Whether they think about test setup, sample size, failure criteria and what an accelerated test really proves.

How would you make sure a design you create can actually be manufactured at a reasonable cost?

What they are checking: Whether they think about design for manufacturing and talk with the plant, since this team supports manufacturing directly.

What's a mechanical engineering concept from class you've actually applied to something real?

What they are checking: Whether they can connect theory like stress, tolerances or fluid flow to practical design decisions.
