Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a fixture or piece of equipment you helped design. What did the operators or maintenance team change after seeing it?

What they are checking: Whether they listen to the people who use and fix equipment and design for them, not just for the print.

Tell me about a time you found the plant didn't match the layout drawing. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they go walk the floor and verify, rather than trusting old drawings that may be wrong.

What would you do

A project engineer asks you to change a drawing that's already been released to the floor. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they respect revision control, since an old drawing on the floor can produce bad parts.

You get requests from manufacturing engineering, maintenance and the tool room on the same day. How do you decide what to work on first?

What they are checking: Whether they can juggle several internal customers and communicate honestly about timing.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd update a plant layout in AutoCAD when a new piece of equipment is coming in.

What they are checking: Whether they think about everything around the machine, not just its footprint, which is how layouts stay accurate.

The posting mentions material movement, waste streams, utilities, egress and maintenance access. Which of those gets missed most often, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they have seen layouts fail in practice and understand the real-world cost of overlooking one of them.

How do you turn a 3D model into 2D drawings that the tool room can actually build from?

What they are checking: Whether their drawings carry the right views, dimensions and tolerances for manufacturing, not just look clean.

Which 3D modeling software have you used alongside AutoCAD, and how do you keep the two in sync?

What they are checking: Whether they can work across tools without drawings drifting out of date from the models.

How do you check your own drawings for errors before you send them out?

What they are checking: Whether they have a reliable self-check habit, because small dimension errors become expensive once metal is cut.

What does a sustainable, easy-to-maintain design mean to you for factory equipment?

What they are checking: Whether they design with long-term upkeep, safety and access in mind instead of only the first build.
