What they are checking: Scientific honesty, which is the whole basis of a staff scientist's value.

What have you contributed to grants, and what exactly was your part?

What they are checking: An honest account of grant work, which is easy to inflate.

Tell me about mentoring someone in the lab.

What they are checking: Whether they develop people, which a senior scientific role requires.

What question would you most want to answer if you had the resources?

What they are checking: Whether they have a scientific direction of their own.

What would you do

How do you decide which of several promising directions a lab should pursue?

What they are checking: Judgment about a portfolio, which is what the scientific lead role is.

How do you work with surgeons whose time is scarce and unpredictable?

What they are checking: The practical reality of surgical research, which derails many projects.

How do you keep several projects moving when each has a different timeline?

What they are checking: Practical planning across a portfolio.

About the work

Walk me through a translational project you led from question to result.

What they are checking: Whether they have led a research programme rather than run assays within one.

What preclinical animal models have you designed and executed?

What they are checking: Real model experience, which the posting names and which is not transferable from cell work.

How do you work with human tissue specimens, from consent through analysis?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the regulatory and practical side, not just the bench.
