Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a capital project that was going over budget or behind schedule. What did you do, and what did you tell leadership?

What they are checking: Whether they surface bad news early and manage recovery honestly instead of hiding a slipping project until it's too late.

How do you build and develop a team of project engineers so the work doesn't depend on you?

What they are checking: Whether they invest in growing engineers and building a talent pipeline, which the posting names as a core part of the job.

Tell me about a time you used data to change a capital decision someone had already made up their mind about.

What they are checking: Whether they rely on evidence over opinion and can shift a decision without damaging the working relationship.

Describe a project where reliability was improved through design choices, not just new equipment.

What they are checking: Whether they think about maintainability and reliability at the design stage, which is cheaper than fixing it after startup.

What would you do

You'd lead a multi-million-dollar capital portfolio at the Argo plant. How do you decide which projects get funded when there's more need than budget?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize capital by safety, risk and business return rather than by who argues the loudest.

Operations wants a project done one way and maintenance wants it another. How do you get to a design both will live with?

What they are checking: Whether they can resolve cross-functional conflict so the finished asset is one the people running it will actually support.

One of your engineers keeps missing deadlines but does good technical work. How would you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can remove barriers and coach performance directly, rather than either ignoring it or taking the work away.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd run a project in a live, continuously operating wet-milling plant without disrupting production.

What they are checking: Whether they understand tie-ins, shutdown planning and operations coordination in a plant that can't simply stop for construction.

How do you make sure contractor safety holds up on a busy site where many crews are working at once?

What they are checking: Whether they know contractor management, permits and job hazard analysis well enough to keep a crowded site safe.

What does a good stage-gate or front-end loading process look like, and where do you see projects most often go wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they know that most cost overruns are baked in early, through weak scope definition before money is committed.

How do you prove a capital project delivered the operational and financial impact it promised once it's closed out?

What they are checking: Whether they measure results after startup, since the posting asks for measurable impact and many engineers stop at handover.
