Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a design failed in the field. How did you find the root cause?

What they are checking: Whether they investigate failures with data and change the design process so the same issue does not return.

Tell me about a time you mentored a less experienced engineer.

What they are checking: Whether they will grow the people around them, which is part of the senior role.

What would you do

A key component goes end of life with little warning. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage supply problems with alternates and requalification while keeping production running.

Firmware and mechanical engineers want changes that affect your board late in the project. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they collaborate across disciplines and manage late changes without losing control of the design.

About the work

Walk me through an electrical design you led for a product, from requirements to production.

What they are checking: Whether they can own a design end to end, including testing and the handoff to manufacturing.

Fuel dispensers operate around flammable vapor. What do you know about designing for hazardous locations, like Class I Division 1 or ATEX?

What they are checking: Whether they understand intrinsic safety and explosion-proof design, which is central to fueling equipment.

How do you approach designing a board to pass EMC testing the first time?

What they are checking: Whether they plan grounding, layout and filtering early instead of fixing emissions problems after a failed test.

How do you work with UL or other certification bodies during product approval?

What they are checking: Whether they know how certification works in practice and plan for it in the schedule.

What tools do you use for schematic capture, layout and simulation?

What they are checking: Whether their tool experience lets them be productive quickly and review others' work with confidence.

How do you design for reliability in equipment that sits outside in heat, cold and rain for years?

What they are checking: Whether they consider derating, sealing and temperature extremes that outdoor fueling equipment faces.
