Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a complex supplier negotiation you led where the commercial team wanted one outcome and legal risk pointed another way. How did you resolve it?

whether the candidate can balance business objectives against legal risk rather than defaulting to a purely protective stance

Tell me about a time you pursued a claim against a supplier for a breach or failure. What was your strategy and how did it turn out?

real experience driving supplier claims to resolution, not just advising on them

Tell me about a time you had to explain a legal risk to a non-legal, multicultural audience, maybe supply chain or procurement leaders who had no patience for legal jargon.

ability to translate legal complexity into business language people actually act on

How have you built or developed a small legal team, especially one that includes someone in a different country like Mexico?

people leadership skill and experience managing across borders and time zones

Tell me about a time you had to push back on the status quo inside a large, matrixed organization to get a change adopted. What resistance did you hit and how did you get past it?

whether they can actually drive continuous improvement in a bureaucratic, multi-stakeholder environment, not just talk about it

Describe the hardest moment you've had managing multiple high-stakes matters at once. How did you prioritize?

organizational capacity and judgment under a heavy, concurrent caseload typical of this role

Technical

What contract management or AI tools have you actually used to change how contracting gets done, and what specifically improved because of it?

whether their CLM/AI experience is hands-on and resulted in measurable process change versus surface familiarity

How would you go about redesigning our contracting templates and negotiation standards if you found them outdated or inconsistent across regions?

depth of thinking on contract strategy and governance, not just legal drafting skill

What is your approach to overseeing outside counsel on supply chain or procurement matters, and how do you decide when to bring work in-house versus keep it external?

judgment on resource management and cost control for legal spend

What U.S. and international contract law issues come up most often in global supply chain deals, and how do you typically address them?

depth and currency of substantive legal expertise relevant to this specific practice area

Situational

Say you're negotiating a cross-border manufacturing agreement involving a supplier in Mexico and the local team has a different read on contractual risk than you do. How do you handle that?

ability to align a distributed, multi-jurisdiction team and manage disagreement with a direct report abroad

Describe a situation where you had to give advice to a senior business leader with incomplete information and a tight deadline. What did you tell them and why?

comfort giving risk-calibrated guidance under ambiguity instead of stalling for certainty

If Litigation and Procurement disagreed on how aggressively to pursue a claim against a global supplier, how would you work with the litigation lead to land on one strategy?

skill at partnering across legal functions and reconciling competing priorities into a coherent position
