Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Show me or tell me about something you've written, photographed or posted that you're proud of. What made it work?

What they are checking: Whether they have real content to show and can explain their own choices, not just say they like sports media.

Tell me about a time you had to balance school with a job or activity that ran on nights and weekends.

What they are checking: Whether they can realistically cover home and away games while staying enrolled and on top of classes.

Tell me about a time you received feedback on your writing or work that you didn't agree with. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can take editing from the Sports Information Specialist and grow from it.

What would you do

A coach wants a post about a player's big game, but you notice the stat line in the box score doesn't match what you recorded. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they verify before publishing and raise the mismatch instead of picking a number.

How would you decide what to post on social media during a home game versus after it ends?

What they are checking: Whether they think about audience and timing instead of posting everything the same way.

After a game you need a quote from a player who is clearly frustrated. How do you approach them?

What they are checking: Whether they can get usable quotes while reading the moment and respecting a student athlete.

What would you do if someone posted a negative comment about one of our athletes on a department post?

What they are checking: Whether they know to protect students and check with their supervisor rather than reacting on their own.

About the work

Our women's basketball team just lost a close game. Talk me through how you'd write the recap for the website and local media.

What they are checking: Whether they can write a fair, accurate recap that still respects the athletes, with stats and quotes in the right places.

How would you keep stats accurate during a live game when things are moving fast?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that wrong stats end up in records and press releases, and have a method to check them.

What do you know about live-streaming a game, and how would you learn what you don't know?

What they are checking: Their comfort with streaming tools, since the posting prefers it, and how they approach learning a new skill.

How would you help put together a media guide or game program if you were given a deadline two weeks out?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan a publication, gather rosters and bios, and proof it before print.
