Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through a project where you took a complex workflow from discovery to a shipped design. What did research change about your first idea?

What they are checking: Whether their design decisions are actually driven by research or whether research is a step they check off.

Tell me about a design system you built or maintained. How did you keep it from drifting as more teams used it?

What they are checking: Their experience with governance of a shared system, which is harder than building the first version.

Tell me about a design workshop you facilitated that went off track. What did you do in the room?

What they are checking: Their facilitation skill when stakeholders disagree or the session loses focus.

Give me an example of feedback you gave a peer in a design critique that changed their work. How did you deliver it?

What they are checking: Whether they can mentor through critique in a way that is honest and still lands well.

What would you do

Public health staff using a disease surveillance system are busy and under pressure. How would you run contextual inquiry with people who barely have time to talk to you?

What they are checking: Whether they can get real insight from time-poor, expert users without wasting their time.

A government stakeholder insists on a feature that your user research says will confuse people. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with evidence while respecting that the client holds final authority.

About the work

How have you worked with the U.S. Web Design System, and where have you had to extend it without breaking its rules?

What they are checking: Familiarity with USWDS and the judgment to keep a government design system consistent while meeting real needs.

How do you make sure a design meets Section 508 and WCAG requirements before it ever reaches engineering?

What they are checking: Whether accessibility is built into their process from the start rather than fixed during testing.

How do you hand off designs so engineers can build them without coming back to you every hour?

What they are checking: Whether their production-ready assets really are production ready, with states, specs and edge cases covered.

How would you turn a dense case-reporting process with dozens of fields into something a new user can finish without training?

What they are checking: Their skill at information architecture and progressive disclosure on data-heavy enterprise forms.
