About your past

Tell me about software you wrote that controlled or talked to physical hardware. What made it hard?

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience with timing, failure and hardware interfaces, which MR software requires.

Tell me about a time you solved a problem that crossed software, hardware and domain knowledge.

What they are checking: Whether they can work at the intersection the posting describes instead of staying in one layer.

This role is onsite in Waukesha with close in-person work. How do you collaborate best with a team in the same room?

What they are checking: Whether they are comfortable with the onsite, hands-on collaboration the role requires.

Tell me about a time you mentored another engineer.

What would you do

A test fails intermittently on the scanner. How do you track it down?

What they are checking: Whether they have patience and method for intermittent problems rather than rerunning until it passes.

About the work

How do you debug a problem on a Linux system when it only shows up on the real device?

What they are checking: Whether they know tools and methods for debugging close to hardware in a Linux environment.

How do you design software that handles a hardware fault safely?

What they are checking: Whether they think about fail-safe behavior and error handling on equipment used with patients.

Walk me through how you would work with users and systems engineers to define a new scanner feature.

What they are checking: Whether they can turn user needs into clear requirements before writing code.

Why does working in a regulated industry change how you write and test code?

What they are checking: Whether they accept documentation, reviews and traceability as part of good engineering.
